Alayne Lamba
Grade 5
Social Studies: 13 Colonies
March 26, 2011

Rationale: Rote memorization can be challenging for some students. By having the students read, watch an animated clip, and use the SmartBoard to learn about the 13 Colonies, students are being engaged in many different ways, and meeting the academic needs of all students. The colonies on the SmartBoard are color coded, which makes it easier for special education students. All students also enjoy using the SmartBoard, so participation and attention is increased by doing this activity. As a follow-up activity for assessment, students will go into the computer lab, and have to match the names of the colonies to the actual colony on their own. As in “Perspectives on UDL and Assessment, An Interview with Robert Mislevy,” students need to be assessed the way that they learned the material (Gordon, Grave, Schifter 2011) Students will and can be given the option to either use the computer to take the test based on the 13 colonies, or have the test presented in a written format. Either way, the student will be assessed the way that they feel is most comfortable for them.
